Charles Leadbeater and We Think

1) We can't predict if a technology is invented then not used for their intended purpose. This can be seen in past inventions such as telephones and SMS. Telephones were originally intended to be used for people to listen in to west end performances and SMS didn't really have a purpose. Only when put into the hands of the user does the unintended purpose start to show through.

2) Users are important in the mass collaboration as they help to create and expand the current forms of media so that the media form they are using is expanded.

3) We Think has had a rather big impact on the music industry as fans are able to remix their favourite artists and it has also allowed little known artists to gain more popularity and eventually be signed. An example of remixing is the FiXt remix community who run competitions to win recording equipment by submitting a remix of a certain song. An example of a little known artist gaining popularity is the NES rock band 'I Fight Dragons' who were recently signed to Atlantic Records.

The Five Big Ideas

Peering – TV gets free advertising as the show gets passed around. However this is bad as some people don’t bother watching the show on TV and just download it at a later date which then effects later sales as there is no need to buy the DVD as they already have the episodes.

Free Creativity – parody series (e.g. Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged or DBZ Abridged) or clips help to give the original series some free publicity but the companies that make them some times don’t like the parody series as they see them as being in bad taste even if the jokes are the type that are simple and not actually offensive.

Democratised - Thanks to the internet and new technologies available to the ordinary person, people are able to share their views through the use of media such as videos and blogs but can also create their very own series on the internet free from the budgeting issues and control that the TV studios such as the BBC have.

Thinking Globally - This also fits into the above point as people are able to discuss their views and opinions on various topics. This has a negative side however as people can start to abuse this and their is a group of people known as 'trolls' or 'flamers' who deliberately start trouble on forums or comments just for the fun of it. It can also be used to out people for their views or preferences and can lead to bullying.

Perfect Storm - Through the contribution of technology, demographics and economics companies and media are able to succeed on the internet. Without one of these it is known as the 'perfect storm' as it is like a small fishing boat caught in a freak meteorological occurrence.

Social Network Summary

Mark Zuckerberg
Started Harvard in 2002 where he initially created a program in his sophomore year called CourseMatch which allowed users to make class selection decisions and form study groups based on the choices of other students. Some time later he created Facemash which allowed students to select the best looking person from a group of photos. He created this for 'fun'. It was put over a weekend but was shut down by Harvard on the Monday because it stopped students from accessing the web due to it's popularity. At the time student's were after a website where they could get the same sort of information they could get from Facemash and the existing network that Harvard had. As Harvard wouldn't do it Zuckerberg decided he would. This lead to the first version of Facebook.
